Children's products such as the plastic lining of infant formula cans, teething rings, and toys can no longer contain six phthalates, thanks to a new law President Bush just signed. These plastic-softening chemicals have been linked to breast cancer, decreased sperm counts, birth defects, and other health problems. The phthalate ban is a provision in the Consumer Product Safety Commission Reform Act and follows legislation passed on the state level in California, Washington, and Vermont last year. Many IV containers have already stopped using these substances in their manufacture.
