“Through My Eyes: The Charlie Kelman Story,” a 1-hour documentary about the ophthalmologist who developed the phacoemulsification technique of cataract removal, will premiere nationwide on public television Jan. 19 or 20, 2010 (check local listings).

The film “finally pays homage to the man whose inventions have touched millions of lives worldwide and whose name should be a household name,” said Roy A. Hammond, executive producer.

The documentary includes interviews with Dr. Kelman’s friends, foes, colleagues, wife, daughter, and the late inventor himself as it explores Dr. Kelman’s struggle for recognition and respect over three decades of research and private practice. These interviews are interspersed with performance footage of the surgeon, who also was a musician.
