Primary care physician satisfaction improving

Seven out of 10 primary care physicians report that they still would choose a career in primary care today, according to a survey by medical information software maker Epocrates.

The satisfaction rate is an increase from past years—up from 28 percent in 2007 and 60 percent in 2009.

Epocrates conducted the survey of 1,060 primary care physicians on a range of issues related to healthcare and practicing medicine. Their responses were compared with a separate survey of five specialties.

Although primary care physicians were least satisfied with their career choice among five other specialties surveyed, 69 percent of primary care doctors said they would recommend a career in primary care to a medical student, and 77 percent were "concerned" or "significantly concerned" about the primary care physician shortage, according to results.
