More Fat Burned after a Low-Glycemic Breakfast Publish date: Apr 20, 2009 ![]() MONDAY, April 20 (HealthDay News) -- Healthy sedentary women who eat a breakfast consisting of low-glycemic carbohydrates
burn more fat during exercise and feel fuller after lunch than women who eat a breakfast consisting of high-glycemic carbohydrates,
according to a study in the May issue of the Journal of Nutrition. Emma J. Stevenson, from the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom, and colleagues measured plasma glucose and
serum insulin responses in eight healthy sedentary women after a low-glycemic index (LGI) or high-glycemic index (HGI) breakfast
given three hours before walking for 60 minutes. The researchers found that plasma glucose and serum insulin responses were significantly higher after the HGI breakfast.
Fat oxidation was reduced after both breakfasts, but was higher after breakfast and during exercise in the women who had the
LGI breakfast. Metabolic responses were similar in both groups after lunch, but women who had the LGI breakfast reported feeling
fuller after lunch. "Consuming an LGI breakfast increases fat oxidation during subsequent exercise and improves satiety during recovery in
sedentary females," Stevenson and colleagues conclude. The study was supported by Mars UK Ltd. Copyright © 2009 ScoutNews, LLC.
