Contraceptives Have Benefits Beyond Pregnancy Prevention Publish date: Dec 22, 2009 ![]() TUESDAY, Dec. 22 (HealthDay News) -- Hormonal contraceptives have useful non-contraceptive benefits, including prevention
of endometrial and ovarian cancer and treating menstruation-related disorders, according to an American College of Obstetricians
and Gynecologists practice bulletin published in the January issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology. Based on a review of the scientific data on the use of hormonal contraceptives for non-contraceptive uses, the bulletin
notes that good and consistent scientific evidence has shown that combined oral contraceptives should not be used to treat
ovarian cysts. However, combined oral contraceptives reduce the risk of endometrial and ovarian cancer and can reduce menstrual
bleeding, dysmenorrhea, premenstrual dysphoric disorder symptoms, and acne. The bulletin further notes that more limited or inconsistent scientific evidence suggests that combined oral contraceptives
do not increase the risk of developing uterine leiomyomas, and that contraceptives may be useful in treating menorrhagia in
women who may wish to become pregnant. "Although there is little data on the newer forms of hormonal contraception in terms of their off-label benefits, experts
suggest that they may be as effective as the more studied ones in treating the same conditions," Robert L. Reid, M.D., from
Queen's University in Kingston, Canada, who helped develop the bulletin, commented in a press release. Copyright © 2009 ScoutNews, LLC.
