Algorithm Developed for Metal-on-Metal Hip ResurfacingAlgorithm may help surgeons identify which patients are most likely to benefit

THURSDAY, Dec. 10 (HealthDay News) -- Ideal candidates for metal-on-metal hip resurfacing may be identified with a new algorithm, according to a study in the November supplement of the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery.

Thorsten M. Seyler, M.D., of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, N.C., and colleagues performed analyses of a recent survey of practicing orthopedic surgeons, patient outcomes at Wake Forest University, and published literature.

Based on results from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Investigational Device Exemption study cohort and other recent studies, the researchers developed a patient-selection algorithm based on sex, age, and etiology.

"Each patient should be evaluated on an individual basis. The algorithm presented here can be used by surgeons to improve patient selection and to achieve a higher success rate, and it will be particularly valuable as a tool for surgeons who do a lower volume of resurfacing procedures or who are not yet experienced in performing resurfacing arthroplasty," the authors conclude.
