Dermatologic examinations can reveal manifestations of diabetes, dyslipidemia, and heart disease, providing the clinician an opportunity to work with the patient and his or her primary care provider. Additionally, there is an established clinical link between psoriasis and an increased risk for insulin resistance, obesity, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. In a multi-part series, we examine the importance of dermatologists incorporating diabetes and hypertension screening during office visits with psoriasis patients. Available now is “All systems go: Association between psoriasis, metabolic syndrome is strong,” which further examines this link and looks at studies demonstrating that proinflammatory cytokines, particularly tumor necrosis factor-α, are overproduced in patients with psoriasis. These same cytokines are associated with the development of the component disorders of metabolic syndrome. Also available is “Reducing risks: Anti-inflammatory therapy is panacea for psoriasis, comorbidities” covering the potential effect psoriasis therapy may have on the likelihood of developing cardiometabolic disorders and on the cutaneous manifestations of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and dyslipidemia. Also coming is an audio interview featuring ideas on how to use office visit time to quickly check for signs of cardiometabolic disorders and how, in general, dermatologists can be more alert to the problem and take a more active role. For an overview of cardiometabolic disorders plus a complete list of related articles in the series, read “Cardiometabolic Disorders & Weight: Action for Outcomes.” SERIES CONTENT All systems go: Association between psoriasis, metabolic syndrome is strong Reducing risks: Anti-inflammatory therapy is panacea for psoriasis, comorbidities | Coding Counselor Simple and accurate ICD-9 code search.
